UCSD Geisel Teaching + Learning Commons

San Diego, CA

Through a meticulous renovation process, the Teaching and Learning Commons on the first floor of the Geisel Library was transformed into a vibrant, collaborative environment that supports co-learning and enriches the student experience. To transform the Teaching and Learning culture, the renovation embraced a vision where everyone is considered a co-learner, fostering a collaborative and engaging environment. This philosophy inspired bold design choices that reimagined the client’s original 60,000 SF program to fit into a more compact 10,000 SF space on the first floor of the iconic and historic Geisel Library.

The renovation was carried out with a flexible approach, allowing the project to navigate unforeseen conditions in the existing structure with minimal changes. The redesigned space now features an efficient, collaborative open work environment for faculty and staff, replacing traditional private offices. This change not only optimizes space but also enhances accessibility and interaction, providing ample student areas and creating a welcoming “student office” on campus that aligns with the university’s vision of a dynamic, inclusive learning environment.
