This modern backyard renovation was designed to unlock the full potential of a once-overgrown yard, reconnecting it to the canyon and eucalyptus trees beyond. The clients wanted to create a series of outdoor spaces for gathering, play, dining, and relaxation — all while embracing San Diego’s year-round climate and scenic setting.

A continuous path of concrete pavers subtly organizes the yard into distinct zones, while enhancing flow and a sense of spaciousness. Built-in wood bench seating surrounds the fire pit, now a favorite hangout for entertaining, and the al fresco dining area takes full advantage of the open-air environment. A new 15-foot sliding glass door blurs the line between inside and out, extending the main living area directly into the yard. A glass fence was also added along the canyon edge, creating unobstructed views and a peaceful, treehouse-like feel.

To support future phases, the design includes a designated zone for an outdoor kitchen, with utilities prepped and ready for installation. The result is a flexible and inviting landscape that will continue to evolve with the family — a modern backyard retreat tailored for connection, comfort, and everyday living.
