Africa Rocks at San Diego Zoo
San Diego, CA

Africa Rocks! is an award-winning, 8.5-acre immersive exhibit at the San Diego Zoo that transports visitors through five diverse African biomes - from the rugged Ethiopian highlands to the coastal cliffs of South Africa. Showcasing 42 animal species including leopards, lemurs, baboons, penguins, and sharks, the $68.3 million project highlights the dramatic intersection of wildlife, habitat, and geologic history.
As Project Manager while at The Miller Hull Partnership, Kelley Ross led the design coordination for this complex, multi-phased project. The exhibit includes ADA-compliant pathways carved into dramatic topography, a 65-foot waterfall, and a 150,000-gallon saltwater habitat with multi-level viewing for penguins and sharks. A 70,000-square-foot tensile structure integrates smaller animal habitats, a visitor plaza, educational displays, and curated botanical gardens, blending environmental storytelling with world-class exhibit design.
Africa Rocks! is a landmark destination that reflects Kelley’s experience leading complex, multidisciplinary projects, with a focus on thoughtful design, visitor experience, and a deep respect for the natural environment.
